    What is Zomig?

Zomig contains the active ingredient Zolmitriptan which is a 5HT1 receptor antagonist used in some patients who suffer from a clear diagnosis of migraine attacks that do not respond adequately to analgesic medications.

    How does Zomig work?

Zomig is used to treat an acute migraine attack (with or without an aura), through acting on 5HT1 receptors in the brain to help deal with factors that contribute towards the development of a migraine attack such as blood flow and trigeminal nerve activity.

    How do I take Zomig?

Zomig should be taken at a dose of 2.5mg repeated after 2 hours if migraine recurs (however 5mg can be taken for subsequent attacks in patients not achieving satisfactory relief with the 2.5mg dose). It is advisable to be taken as early as possible at the onset of an attack. If you do not respond to the first dose, it is unlikely that the second dose will be beneficial for treating the same attack. No more than 10mg or two doses should be taken in a 24-hour period.

What are the cautions related to Zomig use?

Although Zomig is a commonly prescribed medication in the UK it may not be suitable for everyone. This medication should not be used by people suffering from certain conditions and those taking particular medications. You should always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) for Zomig before taking this medication to ensure it is safe for you to use.

What are the side effects of Zomig?

Zomig like all medications can be associated with certain side effects although not all patients would experience these.
    Common Zomig Side Effects include:

    • Drowsiness or dizziness, which may affect the performance of skilled tasks (e.g. driving)
    • Headache
    • Abnormal sensations in the finger and toes
    • Dry mouth
    • Muscle weakness or muscle pain
    • Feeling sick or being sick

For more information about the side effects associated with this medication please contact PostMyMeds or see the patient information leaflet (PIL).

    What alternatives are available?

There are many different 5HT1-receptor agonists (Triptans) used to treat migraine attacks, including Sumatriptan (Imigran), Rizaptriptan (Maxalt) and Zolmitriptan (Zomig). These medications are also available in various formulations such as nasal sprays, oral wafers and orodispersible tabets. If you do not respond to one, an alternate 5HT1-receptor agonist or formulation may be used.

Where can I find more information on Migraines & Zomig?
