Delay your period tablets are available for women who are looking to postpone their natural cycle. Sometimes your period falls at a very inconvenient time, perhaps you are getting married, attending a special event or going on holiday and planning to be on the beach and in the water. If you are expecting your period during this time, period delay tablets could be an ideal solution. This is also an extremely reliable means for controlling your period and will delay for a temporary period of time. Period delay tablets could be more effective for women who have a very predictable cycle.

How Do Period Delay Tablets Work?

Women’s natural levels of progesterone change throughout the course of their menstrual cycle; when progesterone levels are at their lowest, a woman will have a period. Period delay tablets artificially replicate this hormone and thus prevents the lining of the womb from breaking down and thus from experiencing a bleed and a period.

Norethisterone is a period delay tablet, but they are sometimes referred to by their branded names. These tablets will need to be taken 3 – 4 days before you expect to begin your period. Therefore, the more reliable or by-the-clock your cycle is, the more effective period delay tablets are going to be. The closer to your period you take the tablets, the more likely you are to experience spotting, which is when small drops of blood could be found in the underwear. Spotting is considerably less blood than a full period. If you are taking the combined pill as a contraceptive, it is also possible to delay your period this way.

Period delay tablets (Norethisterone) are not a contraceptive. If you are planning to engage in intercourse during this time, you should still use other methods of contraception, such as a condom.

How Long Can I Delay My Period?

You can take this medication three times a day to delay your period for a maximum of 27 days. Once you stop taking the tablet it should be as if your normal cycle has resumed, and within 2 – 4 days, progesterone levels will drop, and patients will experience a bleed. If your period does not come back after 4 days or finishing period delay tablets, you may need to seek help from a doctor. If you have had sex whilst on the medication, you may be pregnant.

Are There Side Effects Of Delaying My Period?

Period delay tablets synthetically replicate the progesterone levels in the body, and thus you should not experience any major side effects throughout the course of this medication, however you should always read the PIL (patient information leaflet) before taking any tablets to ensure you are suitable. These are also quite a low-strength tablet, which means side effects are not too severe. Some women have noted side effects of norethisterone to delay periods such as:

  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Tender or heavy feeling breasts

If you are taking the medication and experience any changes that could indicate the following, please stop taking the tablets immediately and speak to a doctor:

  • A rise in blood pressure
  • Jaundice
  • Migraine-type headaches

Will This Effect My Chances Of Getting Pregnant?

The levels of artificial-progesterone hormone in period delay tablets is low enough that it should not affect or impact your cycle on a long term basis. It is important to note that period delay tablets are not a form of contraception and should be used for the purpose of delaying menstruation, not pregnancy. You can still get pregnant whilst taking this medication, so you should use adequate means of contraception to prevent pregnancy.

Am I Eligible For Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is suitable for use by many people as it replicates a natural hormone that is produced from within the body. Before taking period delay tablets, you should check the PIL to ensure you are suitable for the medication. Period delay tablets might not be suitable for people who have some conditions such as:

  • You are pregnant
  • You suffer from blood clots
  • You have had angina or a heart condition
  • You have porphyria

Taking Norethisterone for a long period of time should be avoided as it can adversely interrupt natural hormone production. This can result in severe side effects.
