    What is Rizatriptan?

Rizatriptan is a 5HT1 receptor antagonist used in some patients who suffer from a clear diagnosis of migraine attacks that do not respond adequately to analgesic medications. The branded version of this medication is called Maxalt.

    How does Rizatriptan work?

Rizatriptan is used to treat an acute migraine attack (with or without an aura), through acting on 5HT1 receptors in the brain to help deal with factors that contribute towards the development of a migraine attack such as blood flow and trigeminal nerve activity.

    How do I take Rizatriptan?

You should take 10mg as soon as possible after the onset of a migraine attack and repeat after 2 hours if migraine recurs. If there is no response to the first dose a second dose should not be taken for the same tack. A maximum of 20mg should be taken in 24 hours. It should be taken whole at least one hour before food or on an empty stomach with a full glass of water.

What are the cautions related to Rizatriptan use?

Rizatriptan is a regularly prescribed medication in the UK for prevention of migraines but it may not be suitable for everyone. This medication should not be used by people suffering from certain conditions and those taking particular medications. You should always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) for Rizatriptan before taking this medication to ensure it is safe for you to use.

These medications are also available in various formulations such as nasal sprays, oral wafers and orodispersible tabets.
