Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Most people infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection. However, if symptoms occur during the primary episode, they can be quite pronounced. The primary episode usually occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted, and lesions typically heal within two to four weeks.

This WebMD article does a good job of explaining everything you’d want to know about genital herpes, but what are your treatment options if you have it?

Treatment for genital herpes

If it’s your first outbreak, your doctor will probably recommend that you take antiviral tablets daily (usually two or three times a day) for five days. Treatment with antiviral drugs can help people who are bothered by genital herpes to have flare ups less often. These drugs can also reduce the severity and duration of symptoms when they do flare up. There is no cure for herpes, but this kind of treatment can make it easier to live with the condition.

Aciclovir for genital herpes

Treatments like Aciclovir provide relief from genital herpes, so don’t suffer in silence.

There are three major drugs commonly used to treat genital herpes symptoms: Aciclovir (Zovirax), Famciclovir (Famvir), and Valacyclovir (Valtrex). They are all taken in pill form, but severe cases may be treated with the intravenous drug aciclovir. People who have repeated flare ups (six or more in a year) may be given a long course of the tablets to reduce the number of outbreaks. This is known as suppressive therapy.
