What is Trimethoprim?

Trimethoprim is an antibiotic available to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (including cystitis) in females who can not tolerate Nitrofurantoin. It is available at a dose of one 200mg tablet twice a day for three days.

How effective is Trimethoprim in treating Cystitis?

Trimethoprim is highly effective in treating UTIs in females and symptoms should improve within two days of starting treatment. If symptoms do not improve within this time or they worsen you should contact your doctor.

Trimethoprim vs Nitrofurantoin

Both medications are useful at treating uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections. They are both antibiotics but work in different ways. Nitrofurantoin is now widely considered first line treatment whilst Trimethoprim is a useful alternative in those who can not tolerate Nitrofurantoin.

What are the cautions associated with taking Trimethoprim?

Although Trimethoprim is a commonly prescribed antibiotic in the UK, it may not be suitable to use for everyone. Trimethoprim should not be used by people suffering with certain conditions or those using certain medications. You should always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) for Trimethoprim before taking this medication to ensure it is safe for you to use.

What are the side effects of Trimethoprim?

Trimethoprim like all medications can be associated with certain side effects although not all patients would experience these, especially as the course of treatment is only for three days.

Common Trimethoprim side effects include:

  • Nausea, Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Skin rashes
  • High levels of potassium in the blood
  • Anaemia
  • Sore throat or mouth ulcers
  • Thrush

For more information on other side effects that may be caused by Trimethoprim, please see the patient information leaflet or contact PostMyMeds.
